Coco Gauff made waves on the court once again, clinching the China Open title in a stunning 6-1, 6-3 victory over Karolina Muchová. At just 20 years old, Gauff is now the first American to win the tournament since Serena Williams back in 2013, bringing her WTA title count to an impressive eight. Her dominance doesn’t stop there—Coco has also become the first woman in WTA history to win her first seven hard-court finals in the Open era.

After her win, Coco gave credit to Muchová, saying, “You’re such an amazing player. You deserve everything, and I hope you play many more finals.” With this victory under her belt and a new coaching team led by Matt Daly, Coco’s trajectory continues upward.

Exploring China: Coco's Imperial City Adventure

Before her historic win, Coco took some much-needed time to explore China. One of her stops? The majestic Imperial City in Beijing. Now, I don’t know for sure, but I can only imagine that Coco’s private tour saved her from the swarm of locals eager to snap photos with the superstar—especially when they saw her rocking braids. Trust me, I’ve been there, and those hands reach fast!

As an expat in China, visiting the Imperial City was one of my favorite activities.

Taking in the Imperial City’s grandeur while dressed in traditional Chinese clothing must have been an unforgettable experience for the tennis phenom. Touring the site can feel like stepping into a different era, surrounded by history and culture that’s as awe-inspiring as Coco’s performances on the court.

Why You Should Visit the Imperial City

As someone who lived in China as an expat, I can tell you firsthand: the Imperial City is an absolute must-see. But—pro tip—avoid it like the plague during tourist season. The crowds of selfie stick-wielding visitors can feel like a never-ending wave of chaos. The off-season, however, is magical. Without the throngs of tourists, it’s the perfect place to soak in the history and find creative inspiration.

Walking through its ancient gates, with their intricate architecture and rich cultural significance, you can’t help but feel small. The Imperial City is a reminder of how vast the world is and how much history we’re only just beginning to appreciate. Each corner of the Forbidden City reveals layers of the past, showcasing the grandeur of Chinese emperors and the deep-rooted traditions that have withstood the test of time.

Coco’s Journey: A Tale of Victory and Exploration

Coco’s China Open victory is monumental, but her travels through China offer another layer to her story. For many of us in the Black travel community, exploring new places is about more than just seeing the sights—it’s about growth, cultural appreciation, and finding new perspectives. Coco embodies all of that and more. Her time at the Imperial City not only highlights her curiosity and respect for other cultures but also serves as an inspiration for us to embrace the world with open hearts and minds.

Congratulations, Coco! You're showing us all how to win on and off the court.
