Fashion is About Personal Expression and Feeling Good

Hi, I’m Carmen, the founder of Charmed by Carmen Wardrobe Consulting and Travel Fashion writer for The Buddy Pass.
Despite the experiences, oppositions, struggles, trauma, and tragedies perpetuated by the injustice we have encountered, we, as Black women, have always carried ourselves with resiliency, elegance, authenticity, and grace. And fashion has served as a way to express these traits creatively.
My passion is helping people feel like the best version of themselves and communicating that to others through the power of clothing. Over the past decade, I have enjoyed working with a diverse clientele of various ages, body types, and genders, helping each develop their unique style. Half of my life has been invested in exploring fashion and style and how they are a part of our collective and independent stories and voices. Fashion is more than a trend; it’s an identity. As a black woman, my joy for fashion runs blood deep. I know that I represent myself and the generations before and after me.
When I get dressed every day and show up to the world. I show up with joy- black joy. I am not only showing up for myself but for all of us.
Fashion can be for anyone, and it can mean anything. But style- style is personal. Personal style is all about YOU and how you wish to be perceived by the world. My unique style is a little everywhere; nonetheless, it is always classic. I’m a mix of Ryan Destiny after Keith, Rihanna after the baby, Keke after the Bee, and Issa Dee after season three. I would consider my style classy, chic, seamless yet eclectic and edgy.
When I shop, I choose clothes that represent how I want to be perceived- unapologetically confident and authentically me. I love to wear blazers. One, because they dress up any and everything, and two, because it’s giving the boss bit**. I particularly love oversized blazers. They are relaxed and casual while refined and edgy. I love my headwraps and hoop earrings. I love my bright lipstick and baggy jeans (90s baby). When it comes to fashion, I love it all.
Someone once asked me, “Do you think people are born with a fashion sense?” I couldn’t help but laugh and say, “Yes, Black people!”.
As a black woman, fashion is more than a trend. It’s a part of my story and embedded in spirit.
How do you express yourself through fashion?
