Meet Asha Farrah: Mexico’s Relocation Expert & Expat in Santiago de Querétaro, México

BY asha farrah

Hola! My name is Asha Farrah and I’m originally from Harlem, NY, and now an expat and legal resident in Santiago de Querétaro, México! I’m also the founder of my company Mexpat Dreamers which empowers aspiring expats to build an intentional life abroad in México by focusing on the logistical considerations necessary to thrive.

Prior to moving to México, I spent extensive time exploring nearly a third of the country before calling it home. Currently, I utilize my experience to create the perfect blueprint for aspiring ex-pats moving to México. I prioritize your lifestyle desires and complement them with the logistical strategy necessary to achieve your dream.

México is such a diverse country with so many places to immerse yourself in. Between the cities, beaches, jungles, and lakes of México, there is so much to choose from. It’s important to make a checklist of your must-haves and be intentional with your desires.

PREPARING FOR YOUR MOVE

Prior to arriving at your new home in México, there are things you should consider to make your experience abroad great. I highly recommend learning the language as it’s a sign of respect for the culture. Also, it’s important to recognize the role your presence plays as a foreigner and how that can contribute to gentrification. Commit yourself to minimize the impact of your expat presence on natives by supporting local eateries and shops, volunteering, and renting locally.

When I moved to México, I knew I wanted to live in a mid-sized city with a great architectural style. I wanted to soak in all the benefits of city living. That’s why I chose Santiago de Querétaro, México. It’s among the most beautiful places to live in México with a unique charm. It has a walkable centro area, great museums, good hospitals, cuisine variety, spring-like temperatures, tons of sunshine, an international airport and it’s close to wineries.

BE INTENTIONAL, KNOW YOUR WHY

When choosing your new home in México, you have to remember there are pros and cons of every location. It’s key to assess what’s important to you and your comfort. Make sure your desires are compatible with the must-haves on your checklist for your new home. From there, narrow down your top three places and conduct a scouting trip. This will allow you to see firsthand your new reality and envision yourself living in that location.

Being intentional about what I wanted in my new location helped me place importance on the things that mattered most. I challenge you to be deliberate about every detail of the life you envision from your desired landscape, weather preferences, culture, and more. I’m so grateful Santiago de Querétaro met my must-haves from my checklist.

Living as a Black ex-pat in México allows me to be present because my life is intentional here. Natives frequently make me feel a part of the culture in Santiago de Querétaro. I show immense gratitude for my acceptance as a resident in this country and I’m treated with respect. Friendliness, warmth, and respect are the cornerstone values shown by Mexicans and I count myself lucky to experience it daily.
